HYLO ABROAD

Do you dream of escaping the United States for a higher quality of life in Europe? Have you considered the Netherlands?

One of the most welcoming, innovative, and high-quality-of-life countries in the world—including best well-being for kids—has a lot to love.

But it can be tricky to navigate immigration, travel, housing, schools, and more.

I’m Tanya. I relocated from Seattle to the Netherlands with my husband, kids, and dog under the DAFT visa. I’m so happy I took the leap, but I made a lot of mistakes along the way.

My goal is to help you learn, prepare, avoid pitfalls, and have a smooth transition into Dutch life.

Why the Netherlands?

The Netherlands is more than just a beautiful destination; it’s a society that prioritizes practicality, community, the environment, and well-being. For those looking for a better way to live, work, and raise a family, it can quietly ruin everywhere else.

Here are just some of the reasons why many Americans are choosing to start a new life in the Netherlands:

English ease

Nearly everyone speaks English fluently, making the transition and daily life incredibly smooth.

European hub

In just a few hours, you can be in Paris, London, or Berlin. A weekend trip to another country is NBD.

Work-life balance

The Dutch value their free time. Shorter workweeks, long vacations, and quality time are cultural norms, helping people avoid stress and burnout.

Biking lifestyle

Imagine ditching traffic and car expenses for fresh air and low-impact exercise. The Netherlands prioritizes safe biking paths and public transport over cars.

Healthcare

Low-cost, high-quality healthcare is a right, not a luxury. Medical bankruptcy isn’t a thing here.

Education

Dutch public schools are free and consistently rank high in global education standards. There are even programs to help newcomers learn to speak Dutch.

International communities

From Amsterdam to Rotterdam and beyond, you’ll find vibrant expat networks, global-minded locals, and lots of diversity.

Safe, clean, and progressive

Ranked among the safest and happiest countries in the world, including for kids (ranked happiest int the world!) and the LGBTQIA+ community.

Business-friendly environment

The Netherlands is an entrepreneurial hotspot with strong support for startups and freelancers.
